Chronic Disease Costs America

We’ve written about the soaring cost of treating those with chronic diseases in the United States many times — here and here.  In fact, Chrysalis Chairman David Jones has also spoken about it here.  According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC):

  • Three out of every four dollars spent on healthcare in the United States are used to treat patients with chronic diseases; and

  • Seven out of every ten deaths are a result of chronic disease.

That being said, we, as healthcareIT investors, continue to see opportunity for advances in technology to improve care for patients with chronic disease.  We also believe these advances will change behavior and subsequently provide cost savings.  Below is a chart showing the four most-costly chronic diseases to treat in America.
